Prescription Required: No
Generics:
Sucralfate
Uses:
Treats acidity and heartburn
How It Works:
Sucralfate, a complex of aluminum hydroxide and sucrose octasulfate, dissociates in the stomach’s acidic environment to form an anionic form that binds to the ulcer base. This creates a protective barrier against pepsin and bile and reduces gastric acid diffusion.
Dosage:
As prescribed for Sucralfate.
Side Effects:
Nervous System: Dizziness, drowsiness (less frequent), and vertigo (frequency unknown)
Skin: Skin rashes, pruritus (less frequent)
Gastrointestinal: Constipation (frequent), diarrhea, nausea, dry mouth, and gastric discomfort (less frequent)
Drug Interactions:
May interact with Cimetidine, ranitidine, digoxin, ketoconazole, phenytoin, fluoroquinolone antibacterials, tetracycline, levothyroxine, quinidine, theophylline, and possibly warfarin.
Indications:
Gastric ulcer
Duodenal ulcer
Chronic gastritis
Reflux esophagitis
Relief of peptic ulcer symptoms like epigastric pain, hyperchlorhydria, and vomiting
Maintenance treatment after successful endoscopic healing of duodenal ulcers
When Not to Use:
Do not use if hypersensitive to sucralfate or any excipients in the product.
Precautions:
Use with caution in patients with renal impairment or those on dialysis due to the risk of increased aluminum absorption.
Warnings:
Aluminum accumulation and toxicity (e.g., osteodystrophy, osteomalacia, encephalopathy) may occur in patients with renal impairment. Regular monitoring of aluminum, phosphate, calcium, and alkaline phosphatase levels is recommended.
Caution is advised in patients with phosphate deficiencies, as sucralfate binds to phosphate in the gastrointestinal tract, reducing its absorption.
Bezoar formation has been reported, particularly in severely ill patients and premature infants. Use cautiously in patients with delayed gastric emptying or those receiving enteral feeds.
Pregnancy Category:
Consult your physician before use if pregnant.
Storage:
Store at room temperature, away from direct light and heat.
