Prescription Required: No
Generics:
Sucralfate
Uses:
Treats acidity and heartburn
How It Works:
Sucralfate, a complex of aluminum hydroxide and sucrose octasulfate, dissociates in the stomach’s acidic environment to form a protective barrier over the ulcer base. This barrier shields against pepsin and bile and reduces gastric acid diffusion.
Dosage:
Follow the prescribed dosage of Sucralfate.
Side Effects:
Nervous system disorders: Dizziness, drowsiness, and less commonly, vertigo
Skin disorders: Skin rashes, pruritus
Gastrointestinal disorders: Constipation (frequent), diarrhea, nausea, dry mouth, and gastric discomfort (less frequent)
Drug Interactions:
May interact with Cimetidine, ranitidine, digoxin, ketoconazole, phenytoin, fluoroquinolone antibacterials, tetracycline, levothyroxine, quinidine, theophylline, and possibly warfarin.
Indications:
Used to treat gastric ulcers, duodenal ulcers, chronic gastritis, and reflux esophagitis. Provides relief from symptoms of peptic ulceration such as epigastric pain and vomiting. Also used for maintenance treatment after endoscopically proven, recently healed duodenal ulcers.
When Not to Use:
Do not use if hypersensitive to sucralfate or any excipients in the product.
Precautions:
Administer with caution in patients with renal impairment or on dialysis due to the risk of increased aluminum absorption.
Warnings:
Risk of aluminum accumulation and toxicity (e.g., osteodystrophy, osteomalacia, encephalopathy) in patients with renal impairment. Regular monitoring of aluminum, phosphate, calcium, and alkaline phosphatase levels is recommended.
Caution in patients with phosphate deficiencies, as sucralfate binds to phosphate in the gastrointestinal tract, inhibiting its absorption.
Occasional cases of bezoar formation have been reported, particularly in severely ill patients and premature infants. Use with caution in patients with delayed gastric emptying or those receiving enteral feeds.
Pregnancy Category:
Consult your physician before use if pregnant.
Storage:
Store at room temperature, away from direct light and heat.
