Requires Prescription: Yes
Generics: Omeprazole + Sodium Bicarbonate
Used For: Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)
How It Works:
Omeprazole is a substituted benzimidazole that reduces gastric acid secretion through a unique mechanism. It inhibits the hydrogen/potassium adenosine triphosphatase (H+/K+ ATPase), also known as the proton pump, in gastric parietal cells. This irreversible blockade suppresses both basal and stimulated acid secretion, regardless of the stimulus. Sodium bicarbonate acts as a buffering agent to neutralize excess stomach acid.
