Requires Prescription: Yes
Generics: Nitazoxanide
Used For: Diarrhea
How It Works: Nitazoxanide exhibits antiprotozoal activity by interfering with the pyruvate
oxidoreductase (PFOR) enzyme, which is crucial for anaerobic energy metabolism. It disrupts the electron transfer reaction dependent on PFOR, a mechanism essential for the survival of protozoa like Giardia lamblia and Cryptosporidium parvum. Although the primary action is through PFOR interference, other pathways may also contribute to its antiprotozoal effects.
