Requires Prescription: Yes
Generics: Itopride HCl
Used For: Dyspepsia
How It Works: Itopride hydrochloride enhances gastrointestinal motility by antagonizing dopamine D2 receptors and inhibiting acetylcholinesterase. This promotes the release of acetylcholine and prevents its degradation, aiding digestion.
Usage and Safety:
Dosage: As prescribed by your healthcare provider.
Side Effects:
Blood and Lymphatic System: Leukopenia, thrombocytopenia.
Immune System: Anaphylactoid reactions.
Endocrine System: Increased prolactin levels, gynecomastia.
Nervous System: Dizziness, headache, tremor.
Gastrointestinal: Diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, increased saliva, nausea.
Hepato-Biliary: Jaundice.
Skin and Subcutaneous Tissue: Rash, redness, itching.
Drug Interactions: Use with caution with medications that have a narrow therapeutic index, sustained-release, or enteric-coated formulations. Anti-ulcer drugs such as cimetidine, ranitidine, teprenone, and cetraxate may reduce the effectiveness of itopride. Anticholinergic drugs may also decrease its efficacy.
Indication: Used for treating gastrointestinal symptoms of functional, nonulcer dyspepsia (chronic gastritis), including bloating, early satiety, upper abdominal pain or discomfort, anorexia, heartburn, nausea, and vomiting.
When Not to Use:
Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to itopride hydrochloride or any of its components.
Should not be used in cases where increased gastrointestinal motility could be harmful, such as in gastrointestinal hemorrhage, mechanical obstruction, or perforation.
Precautions:
Itopride may enhance acetylcholine action, potentially causing cholinergic side effects.
Warnings:
Adjust the dose based on the patient’s age and symptoms.
Avoid use in patients where increased gastrointestinal motility may be harmful, such as in cases of gastrointestinal hemorrhage, mechanical obstruction, or perforation.
Limited data is available on its use during pregnancy; use only if the benefits outweigh the risks.
Additional Information:
Pregnancy Category: Consult your physician before use.
Storage: Store at room temperature, away from direct light and heat.
