Requires Prescription: Yes
Generics: Potassium Chloride
Used For: Fluids & Electrolytes
How It Works: Potassium is a key intracellular cation essential for various physiological processes. It maintains intracellular tonicity, aids in nerve impulse transmission, supports muscle contractions (including cardiac, skeletal, and smooth muscle), and helps maintain normal renal function.
Usage and Safety:
Dosage: Follow the dosage instructions provided by your healthcare provider
Side Effects: Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, flatulence, abdominal pain or discomfort, and diarrhea.
Drug Interactions: May interact with potassium-sparing diuretics (e.g., spironolactone, triamterene, amiloride) and angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors (e.g., captopril, enalapril).
Indication: Used to address potassium depletion, particularly during diuretic therapy, and to manage edema associated with congestive heart failure, hepatic, and renal diseases where potassium supplementation is necessary.
When Not to Use: Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to any component of the product.
Precautions:
Impaired Excretion: Use with caution in patients with impaired potassium excretion mechanisms, as this can lead to hyperkalemia and potentially cardiac arrest.
Warnings:
Children: Safety and effectiveness in children have not been established.
Administration: Do not crush, chew, or suck the tablets. Take them whole.
Dosage Compliance: Adhere strictly to the prescribed frequency and dosage, especially if taking diuretics and/or digitalis preparations.
