Requires Prescription: Yes
Generics: Pyridoxine, Meclizine
Used For: Nausea & Vomiting
How It Works:
Meclizine: Acts as an antiemetic by affecting the central nervous system, particularly the chemoreceptor trigger zone (CTZ), reducing its sensitivity to stimuli that cause vomiting. It also decreases excitability in the labyrinth of the inner ear, which helps alleviate vertigo. Meclizine is a potent H1 receptor antagonist with anticholinergic properties.
Pyridoxine (Vitamin B6): Functions as a coenzyme (pyridoxal phosphate) in various metabolic processes, including the metabolism of tryptophan and several amino acid transformations such as transamination, decarboxylation, and racemization.
Usage and Safety:
Dosage: Follow the prescribed dosage by your healthcare provider.
Side Effects: Common side effects include drowsiness, dry mouth, constipation, and stomach disorders. Rare side effects may include eye disorders (such as glaucoma), balance and movement disturbances, nervousness, and insomnia.
Drug Interactions: Navidoxine may enhance the effects of central nervous system depressants such as sedatives, sleeping pills, and alcohol. Caution is advised when using it with other substances that have similar effects.
Indication: Indicated for adults and adolescents over 12 years old for the prevention and symptomatic treatment of nausea, vomiting, and vertigo associated with motion sickness.
When Not to Use: Contraindicated in individuals with known allergies to any component of the product, children under 12 years old, patients with prostate or liver insufficiency, and those with angle-closure glaucoma.
Precautions:
Caution: Use with caution in cases of urinary retention, digestive or urinary obstruction, excessive muscular fatigue (myasthenia), decreased gastrointestinal motility, and when taking certain medications (e.g., antidepressants, hypnotics, tranquilizers). Alcohol intake should also be considered.
Warnings:
Elderly and Activities: Special care is needed for elderly patients due to increased sensitivity to side effects. It may impair the ability to drive or operate machinery due to its sedative effects.
Dental and Mental Health Risks: Prolonged use can increase the risk of dental caries and, in elderly or mentally ill patients, may lead to confusion. Elderly patients should start treatment at a reduced dose and for a limited duration.
Allergy Testing: Discontinue use four days before allergy testing to avoid interference with test results.
Additional Information:
Pregnancy Category: Consult your physician before using this medication if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
Storage: Store at room temperature, away from direct light and heat.
