Requires Prescription: Yes
Generics: Sodium Chloride
Used For: Fluids & Electrolytes
How It Works: Sodium chloride (salt) is an essential electrolyte that helps regulate water balance in the body, as well as nerve impulses and muscle contractions. It is used to treat or prevent sodium loss due to dehydration, excessive sweating, or other causes.
Medisol NS Usage and Safety:
Dosage: Sodium Chloride
Side Effects:
Large amounts may lead to fluid overload, edema, electrolyte imbalance, hypertension, and congestive heart failure.
Drug Interactions:
Normal saline is generally compatible with most drugs and can be mixed with other injectable medications. However, always consult the data sheet of the specific medication for compatibility and ask your pharmacist or physician for guidance.
Indication
Uses:
As a diluent for intravenous (IV) medications
For reconstitution of IV injections
For flushing IV ports and cannulas
As nasal drops to relieve congestion in children and adults
To dilute bronchodilator solutions (e.g., procaterol, salbutamol) for nebulization

As an irrigation solution for eyes
Compresses (moistened gauze) of normal saline can be used to reduce discomfort from inflammation or skin irritation and to soften necrotic tissues. (Refer to the data sheet of the specific medication before dilution, reconstitution, or nebulization.)
When Not to Use:
Contraindications:
Congestive heart failure.
Medisol NS Precautions:
Precaution:
Infusion of large volumes may cause dilutional acidosis due to decreased bicarbonate concentration in plasma (as the preparation does not contain bicarbonate).
Medisol NS Warnings:
Warning 1:
Care should be taken in conditions of hypokalemia or hypocalcemia, as the infusion can lower these electrolyte levels.
Warning 2:
Use caution in patients with renal failure or reduced urinary output due to obstructive urinary tract diseases.
Warning 3:
Continuous infusion of 0.9% Sodium Chloride Injection may lead to hypernatremia unless free water is also provided.
