Iron sucrose injection is in a class of medications called iron replacement products. It works by replenishing iron stores so that the body can make more red blood cells.

This injection is used to treat iron deficiency anemia in people with chronic kidney disease.

Follow these dosage instructions:

• Adult Dosage

Hemodialysis-dependent CKD

• Child Dosage

Child dosage is strictly recommended by the doctor.

Overdose symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, anion gap metabolic acidosis, hypotension, and in its most severe form fulminant hepatic failure and death. Seek emergency medical help if you think you have taken too much of this medicine.

If you miss a dose, make sure to take it as soon as possible the same day. If you don’t remember missing the dose, don’t double it. Consult your doctor on how to adjust the missing doses.

The IV iron will be given as an slow injection through a cannula (plastic tube) inserted into your hand/arm; the injection is given over 30 minutes. Your vital signs will be taken again after the injection and you will be observed for 30 minutes to make sure you feel well.

Iron Sucrose is contraindicated in patients with • Anemia not caused by iron deficiency • Iron overload or disturbances in iron utilization • Hypersensitivity to iron mono or disaccharide complexes • Serious kidney or liver damage

Common side effects include:

• Cardiac arrhythmias (disorders affecting the electrical activity of the heart)
• Diarrhea
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Dizziness
• Hypotension

You should practice these cautions before taking the medicine:

• Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant or lactating, and there’s no safer alternative available.
• Talk to your doctor if you have hypersensitivity or allergic reactions to any of the components in the medicine.
• Talk to your doctor if you have liver or kidney disease.
• Talk to your doctor if you have Asthma, a history of chronic infection, or an allergy.
