Requires Prescription: Yes
Generics: Omeprazole
Used For: Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)
How It Works:
Omeprazole inhibits gastric acid secretion by irreversibly blocking the H+/K+ ATPase enzyme system, the proton pump in the gastric parietal cells. This leads to a dose-dependent reduction in both basal and stimulated acid secretion.

Warning 1:
If gastric ulcer is suspected, exclude malignancy as omeprazole treatment may alleviate symptoms and delay diagnosis.
Warning 2:
Long-term use of proton pump inhibitors, especially in high doses, may slightly increase the risk of fractures (hip, wrist, spine), particularly in the elderly or those with other risk factors.
