Requires Prescription: Yes
Generics: Omeprazole
Used For: Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)
How It Works:
Omeprazole inhibits gastric acid secretion by irreversibly blocking the hydrogen/potassium adenosine triphosphatase (H+/K+ ATPase) enzyme system, also known as the proton pump, in the gastric parietal cells. This effect is dose-related and leads to inhibition of both basal and stimulated acid secretion, regardless of the stimulus.

Risek Capsules Precautions:
Precaution:
Omeprazole may reduce vitamin B12 absorption due to hypo- or achlorhydria. Consider this in patients with reduced body stores or risk factors for vitamin B12 deficiency, especially on long-term therapy.
Risek Capsules Warnings:
Warning 1:
Exclude the possibility of malignancy in suspected gastric ulcers, as treatment may alleviate symptoms and delay diagnosis.
Warning 2:
Long-term use of proton pump inhibitors, especially at high doses, may modestly increase the risk of hip, wrist, and spine fractures, predominantly in the elderly or in individuals with other risk factors.
Warning 3:
Reduce the dose in patients with impaired hepatic function, as omeprazole’s bioavailability and half-life can increase.
