How It Works:
Omeprazole inhibits gastric acid secretion by irreversibly blocking the H+/K+ ATPase enzyme system (proton pump) in the gastric parietal cells, reducing both basal and stimulated acid production.
Prazol Capsules Usage and Safety:
Dosage: Omeprazole
Side Effects:
Common: Headache, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, nausea/vomiting, flatulence.
Uncommon: Dizziness, paraesthesia, somnolence, insomnia, vertigo, increased liver enzymes, rash, pruritis, urticaria, malaise.
Rare: Reversible mental confusion, agitation, aggression, depression, hallucinations (mainly in severely ill patients), gynecomastia.
Drug Interactions: Consult your physician or pharmacist for interactions with ketoconazole, itraconazole, diazepam, citalopram, imipramine, clomipramine, phenytoin, atazanavir, digoxin, clopidogrel, posaconazole, erlotinib, saquinavir, tacrolimus, methotrexate, clarithromycin, and CYP2C19 or CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., rifampicin, St John’s Wort).
Indication:
Treatment of erosive reflux esophagitis.
Long-term management to prevent relapse in patients with healed esophagitis.
Symptomatic treatment of GERD.
When Not to Use:
Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to omeprazole, any component of the formulation, or substituted benzimidazoles. Should not be used with nelfinavir.
Prazol Capsules Precautions:
Precaution: Long-term use may reduce vitamin B12 absorption due to decreased gastric acid. Monitor patients with risk factors for reduced vitamin B12 levels.
Prazol Capsules Warnings:
Warning 1: Exclude malignancy when gastric ulcer is suspected, as omeprazole may alleviate symptoms and delay diagnosis.
Warning 2: High doses and prolonged use (>1 year) may increase the risk of hip, wrist, and spine fractures, particularly in the elderly or those with other risk factors.
Warning 3: Reduce the dose in patients with hepatic impairment, as bioavailability and half-life can increase.
