Requires Prescription: Yes
Generics: Itopride Hydrochloride
Used For: Dyspepsia
How It Works: Itopride hydrochloride enhances gastrointestinal motility by acting as a dopamine D2 antagonist and acetylcholinesterase inhibitor. It promotes acetylcholine release and prevents its breakdown, improving digestive function.
Usage and Safety:
Dosage: As prescribed by your healthcare provider.
Side Effects:
Blood and Lymphatic System: Leukopenia, thrombocytopenia.
Immune System: Anaphylactoid reactions.
Endocrine System: Increased prolactin levels, gynecomastia.
Nervous System: Dizziness, headache, tremor.
Gastrointestinal: Diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, increased saliva, nausea.
Hepato-Biliary: Jaundice.
Skin and Subcutaneous Tissue: Rash, redness, itching.
Drug Interactions: Use with caution with drugs that have a narrow therapeutic index, sustained-release, or enteric-coated formulations. Anti-ulcer medications like cimetidine, ranitidine, teprenone, and cetraxate may diminish the prokinetic effects of itopride. Anticholinergic drugs may reduce its efficacy.
Indication: Used for treating gastrointestinal symptoms of functional, nonulcer dyspepsia (chronic gastritis), including bloating, early satiety, upper abdominal pain or discomfort, anorexia, heartburn, nausea, and vomiting.
When Not to Use:
Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to itopride hydrochloride or any of its components.
Should not be used in conditions where increased gastrointestinal motility could be harmful, such as gastrointestinal hemorrhage, mechanical obstruction, or perforation.
Precautions:
Itopride enhances acetylcholine action, which may lead to cholinergic side effects.
Warnings:
Dosage adjustments may be necessary based on the patient’s age and symptoms.
Avoid use in patients where increased gastrointestinal motility could be detrimental, such as in cases of gastrointestinal hemorrhage, mechanical obstruction, or perforation.
Limited data is available on its use during pregnancy; itopride should be used only if the benefits outweigh the risks.
Additional Information:
Pregnancy Category: Consult your physician before use.
Storage: Store at room temperature, away from direct light and heat.
