Used For: Inflammatory bowel diseases, including ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s ileo-colitis
How it Works: Mesalazine reduces inflammation in the intestine by inhibiting leukocyte migration, lipoxygenase activity, and the production of pro-inflammatory leukotrienes. It also activates PPAR-γ receptors, which help counteract intestinal inflammation.

Side Effects:
Common: Headache, diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, rash, drug fever, dizziness, arthralgia, dyspepsia.
Rare: Myocarditis, pericarditis, anemia, tinnitus, paresthesia, flatulence, pruritus, urticaria, myalgia, interstitial nephritis, pancreatitis, abnormal renal function, leucopenia, thrombocytopenia, agranulocytosis, neutropenia.
Drug Interactions: Digoxin, azathioprine, 6-mercaptopurine, furosemide, spironolactone, warfarin, glucocorticoids, NSAIDs, methotrexate.
Indication: For treating mild to moderate acute exacerbations of ulcerative colitis, maintaining remission of ulcerative colitis, and Crohn’s ileo-colitis.
When Not to Use: Contraindicated in patients with a history of salicylate sensitivity, severe renal or hepatic insufficiency, children under 2 years old, and those using lactulose or similar preparations.
Masacol Tablets Precautions:
Precaution: Regular monitoring of renal function is required. Measure serum creatinine levels before starting treatment, every three months for the first year, then every six months for the next four years, and annually thereafter. Discontinue use if renal function deteriorates.
Masacol Tablets Warnings:
Warning 1: Rare serious blood dyscrasias may occur. If unexplained bleeding, bruising, purpura, anemia, persistent fever, or sore throat develops, perform hematological investigations and discontinue treatment if blood dyscrasia is suspected.
Warning 2: Use with caution in patients with existing gastric or duodenal ulcers.
Warning 3: Caution is advised for patients with a history of myopericarditis of an allergic background.
