How it Works: Helezol Capsules work by irreversibly blocking the hydrogen/potassium adenosine triphosphatase (H+/K+ ATPase) enzyme system in gastric parietal cells, inhibiting both basal and stimulated gastric acid secretion.
Helezol Capsules Usage and Safety
Dosage: Follow the prescribed dosage of Omeprazole.
Side Effects:
Common: Headache, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, nausea/vomiting, flatulence.
Uncommon: Dizziness, paraesthesia, somnolence, insomnia, vertigo, increased liver enzymes, rash, pruritis, urticaria, malaise.
Rare: Reversible mental confusion, agitation, aggression, depression, hallucinations (mainly in severely ill patients), gynecomastia.
Drug Interactions: Potential interactions with:
Ketoconazole, itraconazole
Diazepam, citalopram, imipramine, clomipramine, phenytoin
Atazanavir, digoxin, clopidogrel, posaconazole, erlotinib, saquinavir, tacrolimus, methotrexate, clarithromycin
CYP2C19 or CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., rifampicin, St John’s wort)
Indication:
Treatment of GERD, including erosive reflux esophagitis.
Long-term management to prevent relapse in patients with healed esophagitis.
Symptomatic relief of GERD.
When Not to Use:
Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to any component or substituted benzimidazoles.
Must not be used with nelfinavir.
Helezol Capsules Precautions
Precaution: Long-term use may impair vitamin B12 absorption due to reduced gastric acid, especially in patients with existing risk factors for vitamin B12 deficiency.
Helezol Capsules Warnings:
Warning 1: Exclude malignancy in suspected gastric ulcers, as treatment may mask symptoms and delay diagnosis.
Warning 2: Long-term use, particularly at high doses, may increase the risk of fractures (hip, wrist, spine), especially in the elderly or those with other risk factors.
Warning 3: Adjust dosage in patients with impaired hepatic function, as bioavailability and half-life may be increased.
