Requires Prescription: Yes
Generics: Itopride Hydrochloride
Used For: Dyspepsia
How it Works: Itopride hydrochloride enhances gastrointestinal motility by antagonizing dopamine D2 receptors and inhibiting acetylcholinesterase. This action increases acetylcholine release and prevents its degradation, promoting effective gastrointestinal movement.
Usage and Safety:
Dosage: Follow the dosage instructions provided by your healthcare provider.
Side Effects:
Blood and Lymphatic System Disorders: Leukopenia, thrombocytopenia.
Immune System Disorders: Anaphylactoid reactions.
Endocrine Disorders: Increased prolactin levels, gynecomastia.
Nervous System Disorders: Dizziness, headache, tremor.
Gastrointestinal Disorders: Diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, increased saliva, nausea.
Hepato-Biliary Disorders: Jaundice.
Skin and Subcutaneous Tissue Disorders: Rash, redness, itching.
Drug Interactions:
Use with caution with drugs that have a narrow therapeutic index, or those that are sustained-release or enteric-coated.
Anti-ulcer medications like cimetidine, ranitidine, teprenone, and cetraxate may reduce the prokinetic effect of itopride.
Anticholinergic drugs may diminish the action of itopride.
Indication:
Used for treating gastrointestinal symptoms associated with functional, nonulcer dyspepsia (chronic gastritis), including bloating, early satiety, upper abdominal pain or discomfort, anorexia, heartburn, nausea, and vomiting.
When Not to Use:
Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to itopride hydrochloride or any of its excipients.
Avoid use in conditions where increased gastrointestinal motility could be harmful, such as in cases of gastrointestinal hemorrhage, mechanical obstruction, or perforation.
Precautions:
Itopride enhances acetylcholine activity, which may lead to cholinergic side effects.
Warnings:
Dosage Adjustment: The dosage may need to be reduced based on the patient’s age and symptoms.
Caution in Specific Conditions: Do not use in patients where increased gastrointestinal motility could be harmful, including those with gastrointestinal hemorrhage, mechanical obstruction, or perforation.
Pregnancy: There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Use during pregnancy only if the benefits outweigh the potential risks.
Additional Information:
Pregnancy Category: Consult your physician before use during pregnancy.
