Requires Prescription: Yes
Generics: Itopride Hydrochloride
Used For: Dyspepsia
How it Works: Itopride hydrochloride enhances gastrointestinal motility by antagonizing dopamine D2 receptors and inhibiting acetylcholinesterase. This action increases acetylcholine release and prevents its degradation, facilitating improved gastrointestinal movement.
Usage and Safety:
Dosage: Follow the dosage instructions provided by your healthcare provider.
Side Effects:
Blood and Lymphatic System Disorders: Leukopenia, thrombocytopenia.
Immune System Disorders: Anaphylactoid reactions.
Endocrine Disorders: Increased prolactin levels, gynecomastia.
Nervous System Disorders: Dizziness, headache, tremor.
Gastrointestinal Disorders: Diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, increased saliva, nausea.
Hepato-Biliary Disorders: Jaundice.
Skin and Subcutaneous Tissue Disorders: Rash, redness, itching.
Drug Interactions:
Use with caution with drugs that have a narrow therapeutic index, sustained-release, or enteric-coated formulations.
Anti-ulcer medications like cimetidine, ranitidine, teprenone, and cetraxate may diminish the prokinetic effect of itopride.
Anticholinergic drugs may reduce the efficacy of itopride.
Indication:
Treatment of gastrointestinal symptoms associated with functional, nonulcer dyspepsia (chronic gastritis), including bloating, early satiety, upper abdominal pain or discomfort, anorexia, heartburn, nausea, and vomiting.
When Not to Use:
Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to itopride hydrochloride or any of its excipients.
Avoid in patients where increased gastrointestinal motility could be harmful, such as in cases of gastrointestinal hemorrhage, mechanical obstruction, or perforation.
Precautions:
Itopride may enhance acetylcholine activity, potentially leading to cholinergic side effects.
Warnings:
Dosage Adjustment: The dose may need to be adjusted based on the patient’s age and symptoms.
Caution in Certain Conditions: Do not use in conditions where increased gastrointestinal motility could be harmful, such as gastrointestinal hemorrhage, mechanical obstruction, or perforation.
regnancy: There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Use during pregnancy only if the benefits outweigh potential risks.
Additional Information:
Pregnancy Category: Consult your physician before use during pregnancy.
