Eskem Capsules require a prescription and contain the generic drug Esomeprazole, which is used to treat conditions such as acidity, ulcers, heartburn, GERD, and gastritis. Esomeprazole works by irreversibly binding to the H+/K+ ATPase in the proton pump, which is the final pathway for the secretion of hydrochloric acid by the stomach’s parietal cells. This inhibition significantly reduces acid secretion and alters gastric pH. Common side effects include headaches, gastrointestinal upset, skin reactions, and dry mouth, with rare occurrences of angioedema, anaphylaxis, and fundic gland polyps. Esomeprazole may interact with drugs such as phenytoin, warfarin, clopidogrel, ketoconazole, and others. The drug is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and should be used cautiously in those with a history of hypersensitivity reactions. Long-term use, especially beyond three years, may lead to cyanocobalamin (Vitamin B12) deficiency, and prolonged treatment has been rarely associated with hypomagnesemia.
Additionally, long-term and multiple daily doses of PPIs may increase the risk of osteoporosis-related fractures. It is advised to avoid concomitant use of Esomeprazole with clopidogrel. Eskem Capsules should be stored at room temperature, away from direct light and heat, and it is crucial to consult a physician before use during pregnancy.
