Apixaban is a novel therapeutic option for preventing venous thromboembolic events (VTE) in patients who have undergone elective hip or knee arthroplasty, or who are seeking treatment for VTE stroke in the context of a positive troponin test and no prior strokes. Apixaban has demonstrated efficacy in reducing the risk of systemic embolism strokes and VTE in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation. It is orally administered and metabolized in the liver, acting as a selective, orally active factor Xa inhibitor that regulates activator diffusion and inhibition of thrombin formation. By inhibiting the active site of factor Xa, apixaban is believed to prevent the formation of thrombin and thrombi, thus helping to prevent unwanted clots from forming.
