Description
Metformin primarily works by reducing glucose production in the liver. It inhibits gluconeogenesis, the process by which the liver makes new glucose, and decreases the absorption of glucose in the intestines. Metformin also enhances insulin sensitivity, allowing the body’s own insulin to work more effectively in facilitating glucose uptake by cells. On the other hand, Vildagliptin, a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor, increases the levels of incretin hormones, such as GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1), by inhibiting their breakdown. This leads to enhanced insulin secretion in response to meals and reduced glucagon secretion, resulting in lower blood glucose levels. The combined effect of Metformin and Vildagliptin helps improve glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes.
