How It Works:
Omeprazole inhibits gastric acid secretion by irreversibly blocking the hydrogen/potassium adenosine triphosphatase (H+/K+ ATPase) enzyme system in gastric parietal cells. This action reduces both basal and stimulated acid secretion, regardless of the stimulus.

Drug Interactions:
Consult your physician or pharmacist for interactions with drugs such as ketoconazole, itraconazole, diazepam, citalopram, imipramine, clomipramine, phenytoin, atazanavir, digoxin, clopidogrel, posaconazole, erlotinib, saquinavir, tacrolimus, methotrexate, clarithromycin, and CYP2C19 or CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., rifampicin, St John’s Wort).
Indication:
Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD):
Treatment of erosive reflux esophagitis
Long-term management of healed esophagitis to prevent relapse
Symptomatic treatment of GERD
When Not to Use:
Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation or to substituted benzimidazoles
Must not be used with nelfinavir
Prazol Capsules Precautions:
Precaution:
Omeprazole may reduce vitamin B12 absorption due to decreased gastric acid. Monitor patients with risk factors for vitamin B12 deficiency during long-term therapy.
Prazol Capsules Warnings
Warning 1:
Exclude malignancy in cases of suspected gastric ulcer, as omeprazole treatment may alleviate symptoms and delay diagnosis.
Warning 2:
Long-term use and high doses of proton pump inhibitors may modestly increase the risk of hip, wrist, and spine fractures, particularly in the elderly or those with other risk factors.
Warning 3:
Reduce the dose in patients with impaired hepatic function, as omeprazole’s bioavailability and half-life may increase.
