How It Works: Montelukast is a leukotriene receptor antagonist (LTRA) that prevents the action of leukotrienes, chemicals in the body that contribute to airway narrowing and inflammation. By blocking these chemicals, Montelukast helps keep the airways open.
Usage and Safety:
Dosage: Follow the prescribed dosage by your healthcare provider.
Side Effects: Common side effects may include abdominal pain, headache, and thirst. Rare but serious side effects can include anaphylaxis, angioedema, seizures, and gastrointestinal upset.
Drug Interactions: Potential interactions with phenobarbital, phenytoin, rifampicin, other enzyme inducers, and gemfibrozil.
Indication: Used for managing asthma, perennial allergic rhinitis, acute prevention of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction, and relief of symptoms associated with allergic rhinitis.
When Not to Use: Do not use if you have a known hypersensitivity to any component of the product.
Precautions:
Acute Asthma Attacks: Montelukast is not intended for the treatment of acute asthma attacks. Always use a prescribed rescue medication for acute symptoms and consult your doctor if you need to use more of it than usual.
Warnings:
Corticosteroids: Do not replace inhaled or oral corticosteroids with Montelukast abruptly.
Aspirin-Sensitive Asthma: Montelukast does not eliminate the need to avoid aspirin and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for patients with aspirin-sensitive asthma.
Neuropsychiatric Events: Be vigilant for any neuropsychiatric symptoms. Inform your healthcare provider if any such changes are noticed.
